The audience will learn about various operatic traditions, and will have a chance to warm—up and sing too! This program was a crowd pleaser the fi rst time we presented it in 2008 and is sure to be even more fun in its ‘new and improved version’ the second time around. The program will feature arias and duets and ensembles from Mozart to Rossini to Wagner and will last approximately one hour. Children age six and older will enjoy this event.

FAUNA ROCK

Fauna Rock is a bilingual musical originally produced in Mexico City. Created by Leonor Azcarate, translated by Joshua Pilkington and Maru Garcia and with original music by Mario Rivas and Jorge Neri, the musical tells us the story of a Little Lion trying to be friends with the 'Punk' Lions. In order to be part of their pack they put him through several tests. While trying to complete the tests he meets a Squirrel, a Rabbit and a Bird finally realizing that his true friends are not the lions but the other animals in the jungle. Appropriate for all ages.

Fauna Rock has been performed several times in Mexico City with two productions by Leonor Azcarate herself, one of them just last year, a successful season of 100 performances with the Grupo Bochinche in 1992 and some other shows a few years ago in the city of Pachuca. This is the first time that Fauna Rock is produced outside of Mexico.

The cast includes Donovan Arterburn III (Pank), Maru Garcia (Ponk), Alma Lozano (Squirrel), Heather Jeanne Rawley (Rabbit), Julia Thompson (Little Lion) and Hannah Tippit (Bird / Queen).

A prolific writer of books and plays, Leonor Azcarate started her career as a student at the workshops of the well known playwrights Vicente Lenero and Hugo Arguelles. Her career has involved her in the world of theater, journalism, TV and radio. Azcarate has received national and international awards for her work and currently lives in Mexico City.

Jorge Neri is well known in Mexico for his participation creating music for TV, theater, and movies. His career is a long one with more than 30 years playing music. He created some additional songs for the recent productions of Fauna Rock including 'Una Nuez es una Nuez,' 'The Queen Song,' and 'You and I.' Mario Rivas was one of the first victims of AIDS in Mexico City. He died in 1990 before the world really knew much about HIV and AIDS. He created the original music of Fauna Rock and was able to participate in the first production of the play before his death. The School of BNC invites you to a performance showcasing the Advanced Summer Intensive students. Students from across the nation, come to BNC each summer to deepen their skills in contemporary and classical repertoire. Artistic Director, Garrett Ammon, Assoc. Artistic Director, Dawn Fay, School Director, Julia Wilkinson Manley and BNC Company Artists will choreograph new contemporary works and set excerpts from important classical ballets, which will prepare these students for the kind of work they would do in a professional company.  This will be an enjoyable evening and a great way to introduce the whole family to the beauty of dance for a very affordable price.

The Theater Company of Lafayette (TCL) presents G—Men in G—Strings: The J. Edgar Hoover Follies, 9 all new, all comic short plays about the FBI and <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />America’s most unlikely cross—dresser.  Although inspired by Hoover, the sketches are a wild ride that touches on decidedly contemporary issues, such as ever—present surveillance and schoolyard bullies.  It's George Orwell meets Mel Brooks.  The show runs two weekends, from Friday, July 30^th through Saturday, August 7^th.

G—Men follows TCL’s popular “new play festival” format, which in the past several years has been used for The Frankenstein Experiment, The Deep Beep Beep (commemorating the 50^th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik), 10,000 Wayniacs (about Las Vegas and Wayne Newton), and Separated at Birth: The Lincoln/Darwin Plays (commemorating the 200^th birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin).

The festivals are the brainchild of TCL Artistic Director, Madge Montgomery.  “At first we weren’t sure about how audiences would react to an evening of original, short plays loosely based on a single theme,” she says. “But they loved it from the beginning, and the concept has really taken off.  Over the years we’ve added things like live music during the scene changes and a comic through—line to tie the pieces together.  Our last two festivals, 10,000 Wayniacs and Separated at Birth were among our highest box—office draws ever.”
