The Colorado Honor Band Association will present its spring concert on May 19, 2013, at 2:30 PM, at the Calvary Temple which is on the corner of Alameda and University Avenue. The street address of the Calvary Temple is 200 South University Blvd., Denver, CO 80209. There is no charge for this spring concert, which will feature alumni from past Colorado Honor Bands.

Beginning June 9, and through June 13, 2013, the Colorado Honor Band Association will hold its summer camp on the CSU campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. Read more about the camp here.

Over the years, the Colorado Honor Band Association has become a very large organization. Here is a short overview:

History
Since 1953, Colorado Honor Band Association (CHBA) has been committed to providing affordable, high-quality music education to young people in the Denver metropolitan area and beyond. Founded by Bill Thompson, the program started as a single six-piece band. As it grew, the program split into two 42-piece ensembles called the Denverettes and the Denveraires and finally evolved to its present-day form: four full concert bands and a pop-rock band guided by a dedicated team of over 20 music educators.

CHBA fills a unique niche in the community by staffing a three-pronged education program which involves weekly full-band rehearsal workshops, weekly small-group instrumental master classes, and weekly one-on-one coaching. Their curriculum requirements motivate students to strive for high standards at each level and to develop diligence and a commitment to excellence—characteristics that equip our graduates to succeed as tomorrow’s leaders.

Reputation for Excellence
CHBA’s high-caliber groups have been invited to perform at a variety of national and international events, venues, and music conventions. The high quality of our ensembles is achieved by their systematic approach to music education. Students progress through a rigorous, multi-level music curriculum and receive weekly instruction in large-groups, small-groups, and one-on-one. High teacher-to-student ratios in our classes allow us to uphold high educational standards, to respond to individual learning styles, and to help all students reach their potential.

Solid Musical Foundation
CHBA students progress rapidly, guided by our detailed curriculum and well-rounded approach to music education. CHBA’s Mastery Learning method books for first- and second-year students were written by Harley Brown, who served on the CHBA faculty for 40 years until his retirement in 2007. He designed these method books to promote rapid progress for young musicians by establishing strong foundations in rhythm and instrumental technique. Students’ musical development is further enhanced by ongoing curriculum requirements, music theory training, audition experiences, multiple yearly performances, and participation in our week-long music intensive summer camp.

What CHBA Offers

• Specialized Instruction: Instrument specialists facilitate 24 weekly master classes with high teacher-to-student ratios ranging from 1:2 to 1:6.
• One-on-one Coaching: Weekly one-on-one instruction for all students fosters students’ personal accountability, continual progress, and mastery of musical technique.
• Full-Band Rehearsal Workshops: Students learn teamwork in weekly small– and large-group workshops, and they receive individualized instruction that promotes optimal progress. A variety of class locations ensures a high level of accessibility for families.
• Performance Opportunities: Students cultivate precision and learn to follow commitments to fruition as they prepare for seasonal public performances.
• High Standards: Our curriculum requires demonstration of level-appropriate proficiency in a comprehensive selection of musical techniques and knowledge, and it also includes two honors levels that incorporate leadership and mentoring opportunities.
• Superior Faculty: Over twenty music educators inspire students to excel as musicians and leaders through their passion for music and for helping young people reach their potential.
