Colorado Hebrew Chorale
The Colorado Hebrew Chorale was founded in September 1993 by Carol Kozak Ward with a mission to perform, promote, preserve, and celebrate Jewish music throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Since its inception, the Colorado Hebrew Chorale has had a very busy performance schedule, offering musical programs and workshops to area schools and universities, libraries, senior facilities, synagogues, churches, and hospitals, as well as collaborations with other choruses (from the Boulder Chorale to the Yale Glee Club) and cultural institutions (Taste of Colorado at Civic Center Park, the Denver Jewish Film Festival, and the Mizel Museum, to name but a few). Since 2003, the Chorale has been part of the Tier III organizations of SCFD, the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District.Among the highlights of the Chorale’s two decades: providing the soundtrack to the PBS documentary We Were There: Jewish American Liberators of the Nazi Concentration Camps (1994), serving as Denver’s Jewish musical ambassador to the General Assembly (GA) of the Council of major Jewish organizations of North America and singing the anthems of the US, Canada, and Israel in the presence of the late Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin (1995), representing Colorado in a concert tour of Israel and participation in Jerusalem 3000 activities (1996), annual Holocaust Remembrance Day programs at the Colorado state capitol (2007, 2008, 2009), Chanukah with Colorado’s First Lady, Jeanne Ritter, at the Governor’s Mansion (2007), and returning to the GA and singing at their opening session (2011).
Communal service is the cornerstone of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale’s activities. Be it in concerts or co-hosted performances at the Denver School of the Arts, J.K. Mullen High School, the Denver and Aurora Public Schools or the University of Wyoming, the Chorale is proud to have partnered with such enthusiastic supporters of our endeavors. The Chorale’s commitment to the community is further underscored in participation at local events marking Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day), Yom Ha-Atsma’ut (Israeli Independence Day), and annual holiday concerts at Shalom Cares and the Allied Jewish Senior Housing. More recently, the Chorale’s programming has also included workshops featuring visiting musicians and scholars, and unique family celebrations at Four Mile Historic Park for Chanukah (2010, 2011, 2012).
