Out and About with Teens in December

This holiday season, many parents are wondering about finding cool events for their picky teenagers. This overview of the December holiday arts scene should answer that question. Many events are surprisingly affordable, and should get your teen in the holiday spirit!
Shrek the Musical, performed at the Town Hall Arts Center in Littleton through December 27th, is a wonderful story and musical that all teenagers know and love. 2450 West Main Street, Littleton, Colorado 80120, 303-794-2787.Tickets are $25-$44, and Shrek is performed on most Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 PM or 7:30 PM. The Colorado Hebrew Chorale will be singing traditional
Chanukah music at the Odd Fellows Lodge (1543 Pearl Street, Boulder) on Sunday December 6th at 4:30 PM. When the concert is done, all members of the audience are invited to help light the Community Menorah (two blocks away on the courthouse lawn) and eat sufganiyot (provided by Chabad). Non-Jews are perfectly welcome, along with those who celebrate Chanukah- who doesn’t like lively music and fresh jelly doughnuts? Tickets are priced at $5, and kids under 12 get in for free, who can sit on their parent’s lap. Marcus; or The Secret of Sweet, a story about a sixteen-year-old searching for the meaning of his life and of his sexuality (a search many teenagers embark on) is being performed at Curious Theatre (1080 Acoma Street, Denver, right around the corner from the Denver Art Museum) – until December 18th. For teens who are looking for self-expression, Art from Ashes hosts a drop-in Poetry and Spoken Word Workshop every month, with free admission. In December, the workshop is on Saturday December 12th, 1-3 pm. at the McNichols Building (Bannock at Colfax, just off of Civic Center Park). Snacks and journals are provided, and it’s free for ages 14-24. http://www.artfromashes.org
Teens interested in French culture and history will be pleased to know that on December 16th, Café des Arts – The French Renaissance, will be brought to Alliance Francaise de Denver (571 Galapago Street, Denver, near 6th Avenue). Frederick Pichon, a local artist, leads a talk about how France became the center of the cultural world in the 16th century. Great for history buffs! St. Martin’s Chamber Choir, along with members of Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra, presents A Bavarian Christmas, with music by Heinrich Herzogenberg (The Nativity of Christ), who was a contemporary of Brahms. As usual, St. Martin’s serves up a beautiful Christmas show – the concert will be light on the Christmas cliché, and Tim Krueger will invite audience members to sing along with some of the German Christmas Carols. ” That’s no moon, that’s a concert hall!” Dec. 26th and 27th, both nights at 7:30 p.m. Colorado Symphony “Weekend of Star Wars Epic music returns to Boettcher Concert Hall at the end of December. Just in time for the December release of the awesome new Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens, the Colorado Symphony trots out music by the ever popular John Williams, music that people of all ages know and love. The Denver Museum of Dolls, Miniatures and Toys (1880 Gaylord Street, Denver, CO 80206, 303- 322-1053) gets in on the Star Wars magic with a fun exhibit of Star Wars action figures and toys, running from December 2015 to May 2016. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia are sure to show up.

On December 28th from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. (sign up at 7:00 p.m. to perform), the Bug Theatre (3654 Navajo Street, Denver, CO 80211, 303-477-5977) presents “Freak Train”, an ongoing improv event that anyone is allowed to participate in. Performers can do most anything they want to on stage for 5 minutes, making it an interesting variety of comedy, music and performance art.
